The GEMS World Academy Chamber String Ensemble performed last Saturday at the Tellal Institute Graduation Ceremony. The 8 students (Gyuho Lee, Gyuwon Lee, Jihyun Yang, Moervica Prashant, Mridula Dhruva, Seongjoon Yang, Seoyun Jeon, and Sofia Faghihy) performed at the event for the second time, following a similar performance for the 2018 Tellal Graduation, in which some of our own GWA teachers graduated. The chamber group rehearses every Thursday with Miss Angela Nastasa, and works on a variety of repertoire such as Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (Mozart), La Rejouissance (Handel), The Surprise Symphony(Haydn), and other pieces in a range of styles. The GWA Chamber String Ensemble enjoyed performing for the ceremony and representing the school.
Sofia Faghihy (Grade 8) Good afternoon and Happy Thursday,
We hope you had an enjoyable week, even though it was unexpectedly shorter. As the cooler weather and Flu season hits Dubai, a lot of parents have been asking for clarification around school policy. We hope the below information is helpful. If you have further questions or need clarification, please don’t hesitate to pop into the GWA Clinic or ask either of us. Excerpts from the Parent handbook:
For further information about Influenza, please see message below and click on the ‘Health’ tab of the newsletter. The following books from the Chevron Readers’ Cup competition are now available in the library to be checked out. Please ask our library staff.
Dear ES Community,
We hope you are well and have had a good week. Please be aware that Quarter 1 Progress Reports will be available today on your iSAMS accounts. This report is a general overview of each student’s achievement at this moment in time. On this document, homeroom teachers have provided grading feedback (ie, scores of 1-7 or criterion descriptors for PreK/KG1) in areas that have been taught and assessed; however, for most single subject teachers (with the exception of Arabic), we provide general overview grade-level comments about what all students in the grade have been learning. For homeroom teachers, we provide general comments related to overall skills and development, along with UoI comments. The intent of our Quarter One Progress Reports is to inform you of each student’s development halfway through to the main Term One (Q2) Reports going out at the beginning of February. You will see occasions where students have received "n/a" for some areas. This is generally due to extended absences where a student was away during a unit being reported on, or if that unit has not been taught yet. In those cases, grades will be on the February report. If you are new to GWA and arrived after October 10th, you will not receive a progress report at this time. Please find below some information on what to do and who to contact in different situations: During UOI2 Elementary students have been taking advantage of the new makerspace room. Connections are made to identified areas of the curriculum and each session also has an evidenced literacy focus. In line with IB philosophy, makerspace sessions are recognized as a way students learn. These sessions are a process, not a product. Students try new things, problem solve, allow thoughts to wander, ask questions, make up stories, interact and make connections.
Whether students tinker, touch, build or observe makerspace invites students to participate in open-ended inquiry. Grade 2 students have been making connections to signs and symbols and they made their own flag and a stop sign, they used atlases and began to identify procedural texts. Grade 3 students have been building bridges and looking at investigating urban renewal while being introduced to the Dewey decimal system and using the index in non-fiction books. Grade 4 looked at the geometric patterns in Islamic art and located art books in our library’s nonfiction area. One class also had the opportunity to plant out date seeds. Grade.5 students have been developing their research skills for iTimes and some students will begin investigating solar power and making models of energy efficient houses.
Congratulations to the Grade 4 (U10) boys football team for winning the GEMS Series tournament. Congratulations to the GWA U8 Boys Football Team for finishing in 1st place in the GEMS Sports Series
