Dear Parents, As educators and parents we constantly try to support and educate students to think and act responsibly and safely. We feel confident in their safety and security when they are with us, but we can’t always be with them. When they aren’t, we must ensure they are prepared for any situation. Our counsellors and teachers have had many conversations with our students about this, but the more we talk about it, the better prepared children will be to confront a situation where their safety might be in jeopardy. At our Coffee Morning yesterday, our counsellors talked about how to keep our children safe online. If you weren’t able to attend, you can download the handout here. But what should children do when they get approached by someone with bad intentions? |
Student Led Conference Wednesday, 14th March.
It is important to note that these conferences and learning discussions are led by students. The Student-Led Conference is a powerful way for students to openly reflect on their learning and for parents to gain a deeper insight about your child’s life and progress at school, through the students’ perspective. This is not a time for parent-teacher interviews or discussions, but a time which has been set aside for students to lead you through their individual learning experiences and journey. During the Student-Led Conference, your child will share with you their year at school in all subjects up until now, highlighting their strengths and challenges, areas in which they have grown, and areas in which they would like to improve or set goals in. For those new to the PYP, this might be a different type of conference than you are used to and it must be acknowledged that students are in charge of this entire process. You will be amazed at what they will be able to show you! The in-class part of the conference will last up-to 45 minutes, which can either be preceded or followed by visits to your child’s single-subject classes and other learning spaces around the school. As part of the conference, students will also work with you to create a reflection to go into their SeeSaw portfolio during that time. Conferences may be conducted in English or in your child’s home language, whichever is best for students and parents. The registration webpage for signing up for a conference time is open now (February 26, 2018). The last day to sign up will be Monday, March 12th at 4:00PM. To pick a time slot, starting on the 26th, enter this link in your internet browser: https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/GEMS_World_Academy_Dubai_Elementary At that link, you will be asked to select the classes your children are in and then register with your email. After which, you will receive a link to select your preferred times for you and your child to come in for their conference. Finally, students are expected to come to school accompanied by their parents and be in their school uniform. After which, students return home with their parents. No Elementary students should be on buses that day, and there will not be any ASAs taking place unless notified by the ASA department otherwise. We look forward to seeing you on March 14th, 2018. Dear Parents, As educators, we always like to encourage students to read at home and help children foster a love of reading. On Thursday (today), your child received the new Scholastic International Schools Book Club catalogue to browse through. This is a fabulous opportunity to get some wonderful books.
The Scholastic International School Book Club is a great way for you and your child to choose books together. The leaflets feature a wide range of books for all tastes and abilities, so there’s something to suit everyone. You will also notice that every book is discounted, so you can take advantage of great savings. There is never any obligation to order, but if you would like to purchase anything, there is an easy way for you to order. We have set up an online school group order so that you can visit, add books to our basket and benefit from FREE shipping to the school. You will be able to pay securely online by credit card, and the books will arrive at school for me to distribute. How to order online:
If you would like to purchase any books from the Book Club catalogue, please complete your online order by Thursday, March 8th, 2018. We hope that you enjoy browsing through the leaflet. It is a great way to encourage your child to widen their reading experience and stock up on great books! Happy Reading, Melanie Hart Scholastic ISBC Coordinator Dear Families, The first week in March we will have some special events here at GWA in conjunction with Dubai’s Emirates Airlines Festival of Literature.
