Dear Parents, Soon teachers will have updated schedules for Ramadan. While our school start and end times will change, the first two weeks of the Ramadan schedule (currently expected to start on Monday, June 6) will remain the same, with only shorter periods as the difference. Therefore, you will only need to have an updated schedule for the final two weeks of school, when many of the periods will changed to different days to align with changes in the Secondary School schedule. |
What is The Holy Month of Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and it follows Sha’ban. • Ramadan moves forward by about 10 days each year. As the Muslim calendar is a lunar one – it is based on the phases of the moon. • The sighting of a new moon starts each new month. • A typical greeting during this time to say to Muslims (or non-Muslims) is ‘Ramadan Kareem’ which translates to "Ramadan Wishes or Blessings". Why is Ramadan Special? • It was during Ramadan that the Holy Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). • The month is a special time of worship. A time for paying particular attention to prayer, reading the Qur’an, performing charitable acts and individual reflection and purification. • During Ramadan Muslims concentrate on their faith and spend less time on everyday concerns • It is also a time of fasting (or abstinence). • Eating, drinking and smoking are all forbidden during daylight hours. • Non – Muslims should be aware of these restraints and always be respectful of them. |
