Dear GWA Community, It’s that time of the year again when I get many requests from parents for their child to be with a specific homeroom teacher next year. My response, as disheartening as it may sound, continues to be the same as it has been since the school started. I’m sorry to say, but we can't change classes around or put students with specific teachers as per parent requests, and here is why. At this time, we are completing putting students into groups, and most groups are nearly complete aside from new students. An immense amount of work has gone into making these student groupings. After getting students’ feedback to start, the groupings had been initially developed by this year's teachers, then looked at by last year's teachers, then examined by counsellors, and then finally reviewed by leadership to ensure there is a balance of the many different factors (gender, academics, behavior, friendship groupings, EAL, parents who can’t be together, etc.). In the end, we then look at the most appropriate teacher for that entire group of students depending on the different skills or characteristics of each teacher. Through this process and the teacher feedback, we know the students very well and feel we know what placements might be best, both for a student and for a teacher. |
Build Your Farewell RAFT
The transitioning activities that take place at the end of the school year are now in full swing at GWA. Whether it’s a transition to a new grade, change in school, saying goodbye to friends, making new friends, or moving to a new country, everyone will be experiencing change in one form or another. Like many international schools, GWA refers to the R.A.F.T acronym, developed by the late David Pollack, to help children and families transition smoothly to new environments throughout their international lifestyle.
