Dear GWA Community, Throughout the year it seems most people often wonder how long this year will last; however, these days, most seem to be thinking that they can't believe the end is already here! I can't believe it! Yearbooks have gone out, reports went home yesterday, homeroom teacher placements have been sent out, and minds are now on September. Thinking back, I have so much to be thankfull and happy with: A tremendous amount of things happened in 2017-18 and as our school grew, so too did our staff, students, and families. During these past 10 years, each year keeps getting better and better, and it's our community of caring individuals, supporting and encouraging each other that has created this. |
Our Elementary Music Teacher Mr. Simon Hilberding will conduct an Orchestra Concert here at GWA on Friday 22nd June at 6.00pm.
Admission is free, and the program will feature popular classical music. While inquiring into actions we take to help the environment, the grade 1 students at GEMS World Academy caught wind of a company that supports planting trees in the UAE. The company, Electrolux, supports schools by teaching them about the importance of the Ghaf tree which is the UAE's national tree. The day was packed with discussion and actions related to sustainability. Grade 1 to 3 students took part in an informational presentation and had the opportunity to plant a Ghaf tree seed. The Ghaf tree has many important qualities that help it grow in this area of the world and our students not only learned about the tree's adaptations but also the cultural significance. The seeds will be taken away, planted and grown with the help of the local non-profit organization called Goumbook.
It was great working with the local community to help promote sustainable actions that will have a lasting impact on the culture of the school. Congratulations to all of the students in grades 1 to 3 in making the world a bit more green! Here is something you can add to the newsletter and send to corporate. Linda, did you manage to get some pictures? If so can you reply to this email so that Lorraine can add them to the newsletter? Electrolux will send us the pictures they have but they will only send by Thursday afternoon at the earliest. Drop in from 8:20am to around 9:20am in the Planetarium as we talk about what happens to student's learning over the summer and provide a few ideas for supporting students in their academic thinking.
Dear GWA Community, As some of you remember, the main charity project that we raised money for last year (2016-2017) was called Adopt a School. This was done via Dubai Cares, which allocated us a school in Nepal. The project took a bit longer than expected…but we followed its progress and we are delighted to say that.. it’s all ready now! Dubai Cares have just sent us a Progress Report regarding the finished project, and really expressed their gratitude : On behalf of the children of Solta, Dubai Cares would like to convey its heartfelt thanks to GEMS World Academy for sponsoring the new school in Nepal. With your help, Dubai Cares is breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education one day at a time. Please check the download link below for further information and pictures. Thank you all for your great efforts and generosity! Elena Aldridge Director of Positive Education Grade 8-9 Counsellor
